The Evolution of Western Art Styles: From Classicism to Abstract Expressionism

Over the course of history, art has evolved to take on many forms. Western Art, in particular, has undergone major transformations, evolving from Classicism to the Abstract Expressionism style we recognize today. Journey with us as we explore this artistic evolution.

Classicism (17th century – 19th Century)

Classicism is a style characterized by harmony, balance, and a deep appreciation for the arts of Ancient Greece and Rome. Often depicting tales of heroism, morality, and virtue, its art pieces are recognized for their precision and technique. The 'Oath of the Horatii' by Jacques-Louis David is a famous example of this style.

Romanticism (1800–1850)

Romanticism emerged as an emotional response to the rigidity of Classicism. Romantics sought to explore raw, passion-driven themes of the human experience. The emphasis was on personal emotion, individualism and nature, as seen in JMW Turner's 'Rain, Steam and Speed'.

Impressionism (1860–1880)

Impressionism was born in France, and it broke from the traditional view that art should always depict reality. Its proponents, like Monet and Renoir, focused more on the overall visual effect of a scene, capturing light and color in a unique way.

Expressionism (1905–1920)

Expressionism saw artists trying to evoke emotion and personal interpretations. Artists like Edvard Munch and Egon Schiele focused primarily on portraying the emotional experience over the physical reality.

Abstract Expressionism (1940s –1950s)

Abstract Expressionism is a post–World War II art movement in American painting, developed in New York City. It's considered the first explicitly American style to attain international influence. Artists such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko prioritized color, form, and representation over traditional narrative in their pieces.
